Until now, only about one per cent of the existing building stock in Germany is refurbished every year. Therefore how can the annual refurbishment rate be significantly increased, for example to about three per cent?

New-build energy-plus school
New school building with low-exergy heating concept and electricity load management

The new building for Willibald Gluck Secondary School in Neumarkt in Upper Palatinate, Germany, has provided a new learning and living space for 1,400 pupils since August 2015. The four-storey building with two interior atria and 65 classrooms is supplemented by a triple court sports hall.

Performance of ventilation systems with PCMs

Phase change materials (PCMs) are only used sporadically in construction, although various products and systems have been available on the market for several years now. The PCM Demo II research project therefore intends to test and scientifically evaluate the practicality of PCMs in buildings.

New low-energy school building
Smart Green Tower becomes an energy producer

The Smart Green Tower is being built in the city of Freiburg. The 51 m high residential and commercial building will have a building envelope made of photovoltaic modules. Depending on the solar radiation, more energy is generated via the photovoltaic system than can be directly consumed.

The campus for the Technical University of Braunschweig is to become climate-neutral

As part of the “EnEff Campus 2020” project, during the next three years a multi-dimensional refurbishment concept for optimising the campus’s energy efficiency will be implemented, scientifically monitored and measured during operation.

Geothermal and solar collectors complement each other as heat sources

Geothermal collectors and solar collectors can be combined as bivalent heat sources for heat pumps. This promises some advantages. In this research project the system behavior was examined in more detail.

Corrosion in hydraulic systems

With this research project, corrosion processes are being investigated in heating and cooling systems. In addition to laboratory tests, a field test is also being conducted where real buildings will be evaluated in energy terms.

Communal energy systems
Modular planning tool for cities and districts

A modular, integrated energy system model is being developed to help municipalities and urban planners implement climate protection measures. The  instruments will analyse the electricity, heating and mobility sectors, the expected energy and CO2 flows, and the various energy saving potential.

Electricity supply in districts
Energy strategy for showcase district interlinks heating, cooling and electricity

As part of the “Energy Strategy Berlin Adlershof 2020” cluster project, the “Energy Grid Berlin Adlershof” project is aimed at significantly reducing the primary energy requirement at the Adlershof science and technology centre by at least 30 per cent by 2020.

Phase change materials (PCMs) are of interest for many applications in constructions, as they can be used for cooling, heating, and storing heat. However, to date they have only been used in a limited number of offices and residential buildings. Researchers have studied the reasons for this.
